Friends, I need a bit of a break. Having written thirty editions of A Sunday Journal, either presenting theory or relying on it as the basis for opinions on the system of fashion, I feel compelled to research without processing or producing for a minute. I think I need to sit with what I know in order to continue building constructively and creatively. Therefore, this month I will delve more into Acquisitions.
Not everything I share directly correlates to theories on fashion, style, or presentation, but it serves as the social and cultural backdrop. That context can (and often does) inform how we dress. That is the point of Acquisitions, to gain a broader perspective of the world and how these seemingly unrelated aspects of life can and do impact us, sartorially.
This week, I am still reflecting on status. Nothing new in particular, it just seems to be a common thread in popular culture these days — the ways in which we seem desperate to signal cultural awareness and affluence. As such we are in a constant state of yanking at “levers of refinement” (a Vinson Cunningham phrase I am obsessed with) in an attempt to stabilize our standing and even sense of self.
